Wicklow Gold Cheddar Recall: Listeria Warning for 2 Cheeses

    What You Need to Know

Abbey Specialty Foods has issued a voluntary recall for specific lots of Wicklow Gold Cheddar Nettle & Chive and Wicklow Gold Cheddar Tomato & Herb due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. While no illnesses have been reported, the recall was initiated after a supplier notified Abbey Specialty Foods about the possible health risk.

    Recall Details

Check your cheese packaging for the following details to determine if it is part of the recall:

Product NameBatch #Lot #Sell By DateUPCGTIN
Wicklow Gold Cheddar Nettle & Chive 5.2 oz2419211138806/2/202579777604573073585016606300

The affected products were distributed in limited quantities to retailers in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Colorado. Retailers and distributors have been notified and instructed to remove the products from their shelves.

    What Should You Do?

If you have purchased either of the recalled cheeses, follow these steps immediately:

    1. Check Your Packaging: Look for the batch numbers, lot numbers, and sell-by dates listed above.
    2. Do Not Consume: Even if the product looks or smells fine, do not eat it. Listeria can cause serious illness.
    3. Return for Refund: Return the recalled product to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of it in a sealed bag.
    4. Contact for Questions:
      • Abbey Specialty Foods: Call 862-210-8150 (Monday–Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET) or email info@abbeyspecialty.com.

    What Is Listeria?

Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacteria that can cause severe health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups, including:

    • Pregnant women (Listeria can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth).
    • Young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of Listeria exposure may include:

    • Fever
    • Severe headache
    • Nausea
    • Stomach cramps
    • Diarrhea

If you or someone in your household experiences these symptoms after consuming the recalled product, contact a healthcare provider immediately.

    Why This Recall Matters

This recall serves as a reminder that even artisanal, premium, and organic products are not immune to risks in the food supply chain. While Listeria outbreaks are rare, they can have serious consequences and recalls like this highlight the importance of transparency and proactive communication from food producers.

The Wicklow Gold Cheddar recall emphasizes the importance of staying informed about food safety. By checking your cheese packaging, following recall instructions, and monitoring for symptoms, you can protect your household and reduce risks.
