    Springtime isn't just for the birds. Who has time to stop and smell the tulips? You do. This May, consider escaping to the capital city of Albany, New York. The Tulip Festival is the perfect excuse to attend one of the oldest tulip festivals in the country.

    Tulips are a big deal in Albany. The tulip is one of the first plants to come up in the spring, and it signals the beginning of warmer temperatures and longer days.

    In Albany's historic Washington Park, tulips are planted from October-November. They are ready to be viewed starting in early May, with the flowers coming into full bloom later in the month. That's 140,000 tulips in 150 varieties; it's a magnificent spread! Complimentary handicap-accessible parking is available during the festival weekend at Albany Medical Center Parking Lot for visitors who need extra assistance or are wheelchair users. A complimentary shuttle service is available--passengers are dropped off at the New Scotland entrance near Madison Avenue.

    According to the City of Albany, "free Tulip Festival parking is available via Elk Street parking lot, located behind the State Education Building and the Eagle Street parking lot, located at the corner of Eagle Street and Madison Avenue. All parking lots are free to use on the weekend of Tulip Festival."
