Substitutions
- If you don't have lemon-infused honey, add 1 oz of fresh lemon juice and 1 oz of raw honey, and grated fresh ginger
- You could go with the classic recipe, making sure you use black tea
- For a vegan version, you can swap and agave nectar in place of honey
- Do fall flavors get you into the hot toddy mood, might I suggest a hot cocktail with hot apple cider, cinnamon stick topped with an apple slice or two?
- Swap out the vodka for your liquid of choice, such as rum, or bourbon
- I like to sometimes add a shot of fire cider or raw apple cider vinegar for a savory bite to this drink.
FAQ
Yes, vodka makes a great hot toddy. Yes, you can make one with hard cider (or apple juice if you want). And no, it does not have to be made with whiskey. If you’ve never heard of a hot toddy before, a hot toddy is a classic drink that uses liquor — especially whiskey — as the base ingredient. Usually, this is mixed with tea but other variations exist.
If you don’t happen to have vodka on hand, you can substitute it with another spirit like gin or even whiskey. Even though they are different in flavor to vodka, they shouldn’t mess up an otherwise delicious cocktail.
I'm not a doctor, so I can't speak to any cures for the common cold but it's a soothing option! Hot toddies are often touted as being a useful home remedy for colds and sore throats.
